Check Out the Lane Cove Swimming Club At Fun Run

One of the focal points of the Lane Cove Swimming Club (LCSC) is the amazing Aquatic Centre which started it all back in 1962. We are talking to Josh, the president of LCSC about the club’s history and to thank them for participating in the Fun Run.

How did the Swim Club get its start?
There was a need in the community for a local pool and the council put together the monies to build a local pool in the area where it currently stands. When it was built, it was a 50 metre pool and there were two smaller outside pools.

There were originally two clubs, one for men and one for women. In the later sixties they merged.  An update to the pool took place in 2000. At the time, a well-known Lane Cove local and current LCSC Life Member John Notley did a fair bit of work in relation to engaging with local government, state government and federal government to get funding for the upgrade to the Aquatic Centre.  In 2000, the then PM John Howard opened the newly updated Aquatic Centre with the fitness studio. And we were really proud to be part of that. In 2017, the outdoor pool started to leak and had to be rebuilt. Now we’ve got one of the few brand new 50m outdoor pools in the north Sydney area.  When the swim club first started we had around 200 members and that’s gone up and down throughout the years. Last year, we had roughly 300 members, which is pretty good considering we’re coming out of COVID.

What are some of the Swim Club activities?
Our club runs a range of activities throughout the year including swimming squads, Saturday club racing during Summer and Friday night racing during Winter. There are also children’s camps over the summer which are really popular.

How long have you been a part of Lane Cove’s Swim Club?
I’ve only been at the club for two and a half years. I became registrar before my kids joined the club. And then within a period of six months I was the president. As a family we love spending most of the summer at the centre so it was very natural for me to step into the role. I was more than happy to help out.Thank you Josh for taking the time to give us a background on the club. We look forward to seeing the your Club at the Fun Run. Stop by and say “hello” to Josh and his team mates at the LCSC.
